This "Waschhüsli" ( a Swiss historic wash house) dates back to 1842 and had stood vacant for years. To breathe new life into this small historic building the St. Ottilien Foundation commissioned the permanent exhibition "Scented Time Travel in the Waschhüsli." Upon entering, visitors embark on a six-minute audio-olfactory experience. The installation narrates three distinct stories: the traditional washing of clothes, the drying of fruits and the distilling of schnapps (a traditional Swiss spirit). To accompany these tales, matching scents are released, allowing visitors to literally smell the history. Historically, the wash house was a social hub where villagers met to work and exchange news. Today the space and the installation continue to foster this tradition of community and dialogue.
